Frosted Cupcakery

Long Beach, CA

I found out about this place from my weekly yelp emails, aka bible. Let’s just say they have cupcakes with ice cream inside of it. Oh and by the way, this is with the frosting on top still. Ingenious? I’m betting on “yes.” Either way, quite the novelty.

Barbecue Chicken Mac N Cheese

I got this recipe inspiration after going to the Grilled Cheese Truck in LA that layer some Mac N Cheese with some BBQ pork.  It is one of the best things I’ve had, so I wanted to recreate some of that magic.  I got this recipe for buffalo, but I just switched it to BBQ sauce instead of buffalo.  I also cut out a lot of the butter to make it healthier and layered the chicken, which I marinated and baked in a homemade BBQ sauce in between two layers of Mac N Cheese. It was a hit and is one of the only recipes I’ve made more than once. For recipe click here.

Levain Bakery - Chocolate Chip Walnut and Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

New York City, NY

BEST COOKIE I’VE EVER HAD! They’re $4 each, and they’re worth every penny.  You get it served to you warm with chocolate oozing out.  There are not enough words to describe this beauty. Not only are they delicious, but they are huge!  Normally, I don’t care for nuts in cookies, but you couldn’t really taste it, so I was ok with it.  If you ever go to NYC, this should be on the top of the list!

Ling Kee Beef Jerky -Spicy Beef Jerky
Chiantown, New York City, New York
If there is one thing to do in Chinatown, it’s to get fresh beef jerky. Me and my friend had time to kill and almost forgot about getting it, so when we yelped this place, we saw it got good reviews and walked over.  We got Spicy Beef jerky and it perfection.  It is exactly what fresh beef jerky should be.

Pizzeria Luigi - Calzone with Pepperoni

San Diego, CA

This place was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, which automatically made me want to try it.  I got the calzone with pepperoni, which was really good…not the best, but really good!  My friend got the meatball pizza, which was bomb!  It had ground beef with some ricotta and marinara sauce scattered on top.  I would definitely get that on my way back…along with another slice or two.

Bronx Pizza - Spinach/Ricotta & Pepperoni Ricotta

San Diego, CA

I came here for the first time after a crazy craving from watching “Best Thing I Ever Ate.”  It was 9pm on a Tuesday (which is late for me these days) and me and a friend decided to go here (ps we went to Extraordinary Desserts after too, but I digresss…).  When I first had it, I thought it was great, but I also thought there could be something more and better I could get, which is why I want to go back badly.  I want to try their Whitestone Pizza!

World Famous - Taco Tuesday
Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA
I was excited to try this place after everyone keeps raving about their tacos, but I was a little disappointed because it was just ok for me, especially since they just made a new rule that you have to buy a drink in order to get the $.99 taco deal. If you’ve heard the hype, you’ll probably try it no matter what I say, but especially for the line, I don’t know if it’s worth going back.

White Pizza

In order to expand my blog horizons along with my food horizons, I have now taken up cooking. What this means is that I now cook what I crave as often as I go to a restaurant that I crave. I wanted to try making this after I went to Bronx Pizza in San Diego and saw a White Pizza on the menu. This pizza has mozzarella, Parmesan and dollops of ricotta. Ps…it has a homemade crust. I added some dry parsley flakes on top too. It was pretty good! The only thing I might do different is make a type of béchamel sauce because this was sauce-less, which was purposeful. I’d definitely make some variation of this again.

Splash Cafe - Veggie Sandwich on homemade tomato basil foccacia bread
San Luis Obispo, CA
I went to this place about a month ago when visiting a friend and got Firestone’s of course, but all my friends wanted to go here because of the Clam Chowder bread bowl.  Seeing as how I don’t care for clam chowder, I opted for this surprise delight.  And let me say, it was the surprise hit of the trip.  This was some of the best bread I have ever had.  It was so soft and doughy and warm (because it’s made fresh).  I ended up buying a loaf to go for only $5.  Plus the veggies accentuated all the awesome flavor in it.

Cake Man Raven - Red Velvet Cake
Brooklyn, NY
I saw this place first on Best Thing I Ever Ate, then I heard it was on Throwdown, making it a double whammy of places to try while I was visiting.  Hands down the best cake I’ve ever had.  I don’t even really like cake that much, but dear god.  It was so moist and delicious!  The cake was just brittle enough that it melted in your mouth, but just strong enough where it stood together on the fork while you ate it.  Then the cream cheese frosting layered in and on the outside.  It’s been 3 weeks since I had it, and not a day goes by that I don’t think about it.
